At PWFWC24, our partner HYDRA Marine Sciencies presented groundbreaking insights on microplastic persistence and the environmental impact of biodegradable vs. non-degradable polymers. The presentation introduced a novel conceptual model designed to help select polymers and materials that combine the desired functionality with minimal environmental impact.
With plastic pollution high on the Green Deal agenda, the focus is shifting to materials that, after reduction, redesign, reuse, and recycling, still impact the environment. Biodegradable materials are often seen as a solution, but questions remain:
- Where do they make sense?
- Do they offer tangible benefits over non-biodegradable plastics?
- How can we choose the right material?
The presented model aims to answer these questions by combining materials, processes, environmental behavior, and the lifetimes of different plastics. It provides a promising tool for selecting materials that reduce pollution, align with EU policy on bio-based, biodegradable, and compostable plastics, and offer clear paths for biodegradation verification and certification.
At REBIOLUTION, we’re committed to advancing materials that are not only sustainable but also ensure recyclability and biodegradability to help combat plastic pollution and support a circular economy.
