Transforming EU food systems with innovative strategies for sustainable packaging

MAGNO seeks to improve packaging effectiveness, sustainability, efficient usage, end-of-life (reuse and recycling), and innovative business practices in EU food systems through revolutionary strategies shaped for the ecological transition required by the European Green Deal and EU 2030 climate target plan.

Strategies to prevent and reduce plastic packaging pollution from the food system.

STOPP is an initiative to revolutionize the way we approach food packaging by embracing the “5 Rs”: Refuse, Reduce, Redesign, Reuse, and Recycle.

STOPP aim is to drastically reduce the environmental impact caused by plastic waste in food packaging.

Bio-based plastics for sustainable food packaging in the spotlight

The European project ViSS will transform the food packaging industry, leading the transition from fossil-based polymers to bio-based and biodegradable ones.

ViSS will demonstrate a circular value chain based on PHBV (a copolymer of the PHAs family crafted from industrial organic residues) as a safe, environmentally, socially and economically sustainable alternative to conventional plastics for food packaging.

Shaping the future of furan-based plastics

FURIOUS is a European research project that develops novel versatile polymers based on furan dicarboxylic acid to enrich the portfolio of bio-based plastics. The 4-year project started in June 2023 and receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe multiannual financial framework.

Bioactive Polymers for Healthier Soil

The PHAntastic project is facilitating the sustainable transition of the agricultural sector by addressing the environmental impacts of agrochemicals and plastic pollution. By developing delivery systems based on PHAs, a type of bio-based, biodegradable polymers, the project replaces non-biodegradable plastics and synthetic agrochemicals with eco-friendly mulch films and growth foams.

PEF World Congress

The global conference offers high-class presentations from top individuals in the industry from the complete value chain. The event will cover HMF, FDCA, and PEF, as well as applications and end-of-life solutions. There will also be excellent networking opportunities along with a table-top exhibition.

BIO4PACK Cluster

BIO4PACK Cluster brings together four Horizon Europe projects — REBIOLUTION, STOPP, VISS and MAGNO — working towards a greener, smarter and more sustainable future for food packaging. By combining expertise in bio-based materials, circularity, safety, digital technologies and sustainable packaging solutions, the cluster fosters collaboration and contributes to the transition towards more sustainable food packaging systems.
