We live in a world where plastic is everywhere, and its littering has become a problem to tackle urgently. That’s why REBIOLUTION project is here to make a difference. This 36-month project, funded by the European Commission at around almost 6 million euros, wants to make plastic materials better for the planet.
Plastic problem and the paradox of plastic in farming
Plastic waste is bad news for nature. In the EU, less than 40% of packaging waste is recycled, which is not good enough. Packaging is the biggest user of plastic at 40.5%, and most of it is made of polyethylene (PE), which is used for food and drinks. On the other hand, plastic helps crops grow and saves water, but it also creates waste. Even though farming currently uses 3.2% of all plastic, this number is planned to go up as we need more food in the future.
REBIOLUTION project's goal
This project has one thing in mind — make polyester and other bio-materials totally bio-based and biodegradable. These materials are made for specific markets, and they focus on two areas: plastic coatings for food packaging and mulch films for farming.
REBIOLUTION project cares about sustainability. That is why the materials developed will be safe, energy-saving, and recyclable. They can also be composted at home and break down in different environments.
Project Consortium
The project has a great team of nine partners from seven countries: BASF SE (Germany), ORGANIC WASTE SYSTEMS NV (Belgium), HYDRA MARINE SCIENCES GMBH (Germany), CONTACTICA S.L (Spain), AVANTIUM RENEWABLE POLYMERS BV (Netherlands), TAMPEREEN KORKEAKOULUSAATIO SR (Finland), STORA ENSO OYJ (Finland), CENTRE TECHNIQUE DE L INDUSTRIE DESPAPIERS CARTONS ET CELLULOSES (France), EIDGENOESSISCHE TECHNISCHE HOCHSCHULE ZUERICH (Switzerland).
Together, we are working hard to make a greener, circular future.
REBIOLUTION project will make it easy for the market to switch to bio-based polymer blends. This means no extra costs or investments, and more adoption.
In a world that needs sustainable solutions, REBIOLUTION project is ready to change the game of plastic use. The journey has just started, and the vision of a circular, eco-friendly tomorrow is bright.
