Breaking Down Microplastics: Insights from the Third REBIOLUTION Webinar

On June 10th, the REBIOLUTION project hosted its third public webinar, “Breaking Down Microplastics – From Science to Solutions,” in collaboration with project partner BASF. The session focused on one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges: the presence and persistence of microplastics in soil ecosystems, and how soil-biodegradable materials may offer a promising alternative.

Scientific Expertise at the Forefront

The webinar featured two leading experts whose work is at the cutting edge of microplastics research:

  • Dr. Patrizia Pfohl (BASF, Germany) presented new research on the fragmentation behaviour of certified soil-biodegradable mulch films, comparing their performance against conventional, persistent microplastics. Her findings contribute to the understanding of how biodegradable materials behave in real-world agricultural settings, and how they might reduce long-term plastic pollution in soils.

  • Marieke Brouwer (Wageningen University & Research, The Netherlands) shared innovative modeling approaches to evaluate microplastic accumulation and environmental exposure. Her research offers valuable insights into how microplastics disperse and persist in terrestrial environments, helping to predict their potential risks.

A Space for Discussion and Exchange

The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, allowing participants to directly engage with the speakers. The discussion highlighted the need for interdisciplinary collaboration between material scientists, modelers, agronomists, and policy experts to tackle the complexity of microplastic pollution.
