About the project
The EU has set itself ambitious targets in the Green Deal.
The use of alternative fossil-free raw materials, such as bio-based or recycled raw materials, as well as recyclable and/or biodegradable materials, plays a central role in achieving these circularity goals.
REBIOLUTION aims to design and synthetize novel fully bio-based and biodegradable polyester blends based on 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and other bio-based monomers fit for specific product-market applications.
FDCA
Objectives
- Develop fully bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable plastics for paper food packaging and agricultural films
- Raw material sourcing from annually renewable sources
- Biodegradable in home and industrial composting, soil and aquatic environments
- Recyclable
- Enhancing circularity in applications where mechanical recycling is not possible – food paper packaging and agricultural films
- Safe to use
Establish well-defined properties to improve sustainability, using non-toxic substances, reducing the consumption of non-renewable resources while ensuring recyclability and biodegradability, both in home composting and in soil, fresh water and the marine environment.
